Ground nesting birds and the law

On any walks with dogs at this time of year, leads are essential to prevent dogs harming ground-nesting birds. Please be an aware and responsible dog walker and help us keep wildlife safe!

Bird nesting season usually takes place between March and September each year. However, the timing can vary depending on weather conditions and bird species.

Works can take place to trees and hedgerows during bird nesting season as long as a thorough inspection has taken place on the site by a qualified specialist for example, tree surgeon or ecologist prior to any works commencing to ensure nesting birds or other wildlife are not disturbed.

However, it is strongly recommended to undertake vegetation or tree works outside this period to prevent the risk of disturbing nesting birds or other wildlife.

Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981

It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, or to intentionally kill, injure or take chicks or adults, or intentionally take or destroy any eggs.

The penalties for disturbing nesting birds can include unlimited fines and up to six months in prison. All nesting birds, their eggs and nests are protected by law.

What to do if nesting birds are being disturbed or about to be

If you feel that nesting birds or other wildlife for example bats, birds, badgers are being disturbed or about to be, please contact Avon and Somerset Police immediately by dialling 101 as the incident will need to be reported to the Wildlife Crime Officer in the first instance.

Provided it is safe to do so, you might also consider taking photographs, and or videos of any vehicles and persons involved to assist the police with their investigation.

You can report a crime against birds on the RSPB website.

If you are unsure what to do, contact RSPB Wildlife Enquiries on 01767 693690.

Alert: ATM (Cash Point) Skimmers

The Avon and Somerset Police Fraud Team have seen an increase in ATM skimmers
being used. They have recently been discovered in Westbury, Henbury and Brislington in Bristol.

Criminals attach a skimmer device to the card reader of an ATM so that when an unsuspecting individual uses the ATM, the device will capture their card details and/or PIN.

Skimming techniques used by criminals include:

  • Placing an overlay at the at the entry point of the card reader, capturing the card details
  • Placing an overlay on the ATM keypad, which will capture the user’s PIN
  • Placing a camera on the ATM to capture the information
an image of a card reader overlay, it looks similar to the real thing but may not follow the shape of the existing machine or may feel like a newer or cleaner material

Fraudsters don’t always use a device to get hold of your card details. Be wary of people around you as you use an ATM. Someone might be looking over your shoulder for your PIN and may then try to distract you and take your card. This is known as “shoulder surfing”.

an image of a keypad overlay, it can be easily pealed off from the real thing but may feel similar

Inspect the ATM before entering your card for anything which looks suspicious, e.g.
attachments/loose parts, tape, or glue

Cover your PIN from possible hidden cameras

If you notice anything suspicious, notify the police/ATM provider immediately

Regularly check your bank statements for any unrecognised transactions and speak to your bank about anything you are unsure of

If you are suspicious of someone nearby as you approach an ATM, walk away and use an alternative one
