The parish of Lydford, which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, consists of four settlements: Lydford on Fosse, East Lydford, West Lydford and Lydford Fairplace.

It is situated at the crossroads of the A37 Yeovil to Bristol road, known by its old Roman name, the Fosse Way, and the B3153 Somerton to Castle Cary Road. There are some 520 people in the Parish, which covers approximately six square miles.

Politically the Parish is in the Butleigh and Baltonsborough Ward of Mendip District Council, the Mendip South West Division of Somerset County Council and the Parliamentary Constituency of Somerton and Frome.
