The Avon and Somerset Police Fraud Team have seen an increase in ATM skimmers
being used. They have recently been discovered in Westbury, Henbury and Brislington in Bristol.
Criminals attach a skimmer device to the card reader of an ATM so that when an unsuspecting individual uses the ATM, the device will capture their card details and/or PIN.
Skimming techniques used by criminals include:
- Placing an overlay at the at the entry point of the card reader, capturing the card details
- Placing an overlay on the ATM keypad, which will capture the user’s PIN
- Placing a camera on the ATM to capture the information

Fraudsters don’t always use a device to get hold of your card details. Be wary of people around you as you use an ATM. Someone might be looking over your shoulder for your PIN and may then try to distract you and take your card. This is known as “shoulder surfing”.

Inspect the ATM before entering your card for anything which looks suspicious, e.g.
attachments/loose parts, tape, or glue
Cover your PIN from possible hidden cameras
If you notice anything suspicious, notify the police/ATM provider immediately
Regularly check your bank statements for any unrecognised transactions and speak to your bank about anything you are unsure of
If you are suspicious of someone nearby as you approach an ATM, walk away and use an alternative one
